Ebay get into the Christmas Spirit this year by creating their own Boutique on Dean Street. The aim of the shop was to enable shoppers to access the world of Ebay via smart phones. With an increase in smartphone and tablet purchasing the store provided an opportunity for shoppers to browse products, access ‘Bargain Alerts’ via QR codes and gain inspiration from the ‘Wish Window’. The store was only accessible for 5 days and displayed a key way of bridging the gap between online and physical stores.
With the current trend and surging popularity of pop-up stores, including the recent construction of the pop-up mall, Boxpark in Shoreditch, are online retailers going to have to consider creating a physical presence on the High Street, and should this progression be a permanent fixture or is the unique limited time period the key factor?  Does this creative retail method mean that emerging technologies will have the opportunity to assist with connecting brands to their technology savvy consumers?

Holition brings reality to the virtual shop window.

The Tech City company behind technology that lets passing customers and online shoppers ‘try on’ clothes and accessories on convincing clients that their work is more than just a marketing gimmick.

If the future envisaged during the virtual reality research boom of the 1990s had proved accurate, we would be hooked to bulky headsets and living in personalised computer generated idylls by now.

That prediction has proved only marginally more accurate than the flying cars portrayed in Back to the Future II. But the founders of a small company working in a basement in east London’s “tech city” are confident that their faith in a close relation to virtual reality technology won’t prove as laughably quaint.

Holition’s Jonathan Chippindale and Lynne Murray insist that “augmented reality”, which seeks to bring the virtual into the real world, will help define the future of retailing; indeed, it’s already making its mark on luxury brands, they say.

A slip of paper tipped on to a magazine advert can become a pair of virtual earrings when held in front of an iPad’s webcam, for example. Holition says it could eventually bring advertising and e-commerce to life by allowing consumers to try on a store’s entire range of clothes without ever leaving their home.

Stylus Trend Day

Online visionaries ’Stylus’ held an exclusive ‘Trend Day’, where presentations were given by Holition’s Brand Director, Lynne Murray, amongst a wealth of other industry professionals. These included Odette Toilette, Max Fraser Design, The Womens Room, Elio Studio, Super/Collider and Mudlark.

Holition presented Augmented Reality technology and demonstrated how Augmented Reality solutions can be used to drive consumers in store. Innovative issues in subject areas such as linking Science with Technology and the progression of delivering content to consumers in micro sections were covered. A thoroughly enjoyable, informative and inspirational day was had by all!
